Windows 7 SKUs Announced

image Today Microsoft announced the SKUs for Windows 7.

The version lineup is different than Vista. Home Basic is now only available in “emerging markets”, and a new “Starter” edition has been added for lower-powered PCs (think netbooks). That’s a bit of a reversal compared to Vista where “Home Basic” was on just about every PC at big box stores.

Also noteworthy is that the “Ultimate” version won’t be sold directly to businesses or consumers, and will only be offered as an add-on. Here are the highlights of the different versions of Windows 7:

  • Windows 7 Starter
    – Broad app and device compatibility with up to 3 concurrent applications
    – Ability to join a Home Group
    – Improved taskbar and JumpLists
  • Windows 7 Home Basic
    – Available in Emerging Markets only
    – Unlimited applications
    – Live thumbnail previews & enhanced visual experience
    – Advanced networking support (ad-hoc wireless networks and internet connection sharing)
    – Mobility Center
  • Windows 7 Home Premium
    – Unlimited applications
    – Aero Glass & advanced windows navigation
    – Easy networking & sharing across all your PCs & devices
    – Improved media format support, enhancements to Windows Media Center and media streaming, including Play To
    – Multi-touch and improved handwriting recognition
  • Windows 7 Professional
    – Unlimited applications
    – Ability to join a managed network with Domain Join
    – Protect  data with advanced network backup and Encrypting File System
    – Print to the right printer at home or work with Location Aware Printing
  • Windows 7 Enterprise
    – Available through Microsoft Volume Licensing only
    – Unlimited applications
    – BitLocker data protection on internal and external drives
    – DirectAccess provides seamless connectivity to your corporate network.  (requires Windows Server 2008 R2)
    – Decrease time branch office workers wait to open file across the network with BranchCache. (requires Windows Server 2008 R2)
    – Prevent unauthorized software from running with AppLocker
  • Windows 7 Ultimate
    – Unlimited applications
    – Includes all Enterprise and all Home Premium features, including multi-language packs

SBS-MVP 2009

I got an email from Microsoft that I’ve just received the Small Business Server Most Valuable Professional [SBS-MVP] award for 2009. Yay! 🙂

Whoop, there it is!

Also re-awarded with the SBS-MVP this January are several others, including:

Congratulations folks!

Also, sadly Michael Jenkins is retiring from the MVP program, but he’ll still continue to be heavily involved and very active in the SBS/SMB community. Thanks for all of your hard work Michael.

Webcast – Vista Objections and Solution Selling

It seems like everybody has an opinion about Vista these days, and more often than not, it’s a negative opinion based on press / advertising / word of mouth / and perception rather than hands-on experience (think ‘Mojave Experiment’).

If you’re a Microsoft Partner and you’d like to know how to handle these objections and get the most out of Windows Vista, be sure to sign up for the following two webcasts and join Ron Grattopp as he presents:

“Windows Vista: What you need to know about selling it and how to combat the negative perceptions and objections”

In addition to discussing Vista objections, Ron will also show how to implement a “solution” approach to selling Windows Vista. And there’s an added bonus if you attend both seminars.

    Greetings from Issaquah

sbs_2008_logo_small For five days this week I’m in Issaquah, Washington (southeast of Seattle) at the Microsoft Sammamish campus for the special SBS 2008 training that Microsoft arranged for the SBS-MVPs. So far the training has been absolutely fantastic. This is, by far, the most in-depth and valuable software training I’ve ever received, and I am tremendously thankful for the opportunity to be here! I just can’t thank Kevin Beares and his team enough for putting this event together, and our instructor, John Bay, knows this product with a depth I’ve never seen first-hand before. I’ve been using SBS since version 4.0, and it’s awesome to be able to turn the new 2008 version inside out and see what makes it tick.

In addition to the phenomenal training, another huge benefit of being here in person is the opportunity to network with the Microsoft SBS product team and other SBS-MVPs from around the world. It’s impossible to articulate just how much experience and passion these folks have for the SBS product and the community that uses and supports it. At every opportunity you’ll see folks sharing information, discussing best practices, giving feedback, and debating (sometimes fervently) the issues in the community and the product itself.

On Tuesday night Kevin Beares took the MVPs and some Microsoft folks out to dinner at Pogacha (a restaurant I *highly* recommend). As always, I feel like the least qualified person to be in the same room, but I’m thrilled at the opportunity to be there and share ideas and experiences.  Unfortunately, not everyone could make it to the training event, for various reasons. But for those of you have had a question answered in the SBS newsgroups, this picture of the dinner attendees should help you put a name with the face.
